Writing advice from Oswald Chambers...

Image
I don’t know about you, but for me, it is very hard to resist a secondhand bookstore! I love the possibility of finding a rare or out-of-print treasure to add to my ever-growing collection of books. One such a treasure caught my attention on the crowded shelf of a charming little bookstore located in a small coastal village. It was My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers. Chambers was born in 1874, in Scotland, and was converted to Christianity under the ministry of another great legend, Charles Spurgeon. With his exceptional mind and an intense love for Jesus Christ and for people, Oswald Chambers had conducted several outstanding Bible teaching ministries in the USA, UK and Japan. He also ministered as a YMCA chaplain to Australian and New Zealand troops in Egypt during World War I. Although more than thirty titles bear his name, My Utmost for His Highest remained his best-known book. What a find! True to his reputation, and not disappointing my expectations

Why I have decided to go indie...

I am very excited to announce that I have published my first Contemporary Christian Fiction Novella as an indie author! The Grace Song is a story about grace, love and second chances. But ultimately it is a story about faith and how it turns out that believing really is seeing (John 11:40). You can purchase the book from Amazon here . Don’t miss the 67% discount promotion running from 17-24 Oct 2019! Why did I choose to go indie? 1.)     Traditional publishers tend to suck all the joy out of writing. I say this with a lot of respect towards traditional publishers. I know that their job is not an easy one. But, as a writer, I am sure that you have also read through the guidelines of publishers only to find that your story is not even close to what they want! So what do you do? You go back and change your story to meet their guidelines. Suddenly it’s not that much fun anymore. You must now try to fit your story into their mold of what stories the wor

So, you have poured your heart out over your keyboard. You have spent hours on research. You have read your work a thousand times over and over again and have edited like a heartless crazy-person. You have checked every Bible reference twenty times. You have searched for that perfect image and have struggled for hours trying to put together an unmissable image for your post. Finally, you hit the publish button and sit back expectantly, waiting for the page view numbers to sky rocket like never before. Because, this post is by far your best ever, most sincere, most anointed post of all the posts you’ve ever written. Or so you thought... After two hours you have two page views, and one of them is your spouse. Oh yes, you remember, you’ve got a social-network platform that you have created because some top-seller, award-winning author at some seminar have told you that you shouldn’t even try to get published without one. So, you hit the share button on all of your social-network

Your holy words...

Statistics show that six out of ten Christians read their Bibles on occasion. Only thirty seven percent read their Bibles weekly and sixteen percent read it daily. Only sixteen percent!   These are shocking statistics if you keep in mind the vital importance of God’s Word in a Christian’s life! It is God breathed. It is alive and active. Has authority. Provides guidance. Is the lamp that lights up the road ahead. Our Sword. It is the living Word of God that upholds all things! As a Christian writer you have a huge responsibility to lead readers to the Word by your words. How do you do that? By making sure you use Scripture correctly in your writing. Your interpretations of Bible verses should be enlightened by the Holy Spirit and your statements should be backed by the Word of God. Do not make a statement if you cannot back it with Scripture. Don’t interpret a Bible verse if you are not a hundred percent sure that you understand it correctly.

Why write for Christ?

There are different reasons why writers decide to write for the Christian audience. Whether a religious blog, Christian fiction or worship songs. Whatever the type of writing, they’ve made the decision to write for Christ. I’ve read the following statement that stuck with me and eventually became my motto in writing: “The Gospel frees us to create for the pure joy of creating, not seeking fortune or fame, but the fame of the One who has called us to create.”   - From Jordan Raynor’s YouVersion devotion, C.S. Lewis & the call to create This should be the reason why you write for Christ. For his fame. Not yours. Not because you want to be admired and labeled as a holy, religious person. Not because you want to sound clever and boast about your knowledge of the Bible and religious aspects. Not for the sake of fortune or fame. The very first reason why you write for Christ is because you love Him with all of your heart, soul and mind (Matt. 22:37). You want to
